My favorite place to ski is in Utah, and we had an opportunity to ski a few days again this past January. Hanes recently introduced me to Snowbasin, and what a mountain! We always hit Alta and the ‘Bird, but a new set of terrain to play on is great. The steeps and trees are more than fun. The sun doesn’t really hit Hell’s Canyon much so it stays light and fluffy for days after a storm. The Men’s and Women’s Downhill competition was held at Snowbasin during the Olympics, so the resort was really dressed out with that exposure in mind.
The lodges are all over-the-top in design and appointments. At lunch, you walk from the cafeteria across wool carpeting with your PBJ and Polygamy Porter, and sit your soggy bottom on leather seating in front of fireplaces in which you could almost stand. But no one is snooty. It’s comfortable, great for families, great for strong skiers looking for deep and steep, and fun for those who want to chill in luxury. The bathroom alone is like a penthouse.
From my time skiing over the years, these are my favorite must-have’s for gear: merino baselayer, softshell, Darn Tough socks, Arc’teryx shell, and a super-thin insulation layer.
An abbreviated version of the movie I made from this trip…
